the concept of layering 2d animation over cg animation is still fairly novel to me. however, there's probably no small measure of nostalgia involved there. my childhood was full of imaginative sci-fi adventures that utilized that same blend of animation. wonderful days would've fit right in. its colors and visuals pop- when they're given room to. there's some genuinely striking imagery in this movie.
that's about all it has going for it though- which is not so much of a negative thing as it is a categorical one. wonderful days is not strong in compelling characterization or narrative intrigue. it operates with familiar archetypes and in vast, broad strokes. it features a story about environmental ruin and class warfare, but never digs into either theme.
like lightsabers in star wars, these story elements merely are; ultimately decorative yet aesthetically defining of the movie's fundamental image. it's only in this way that the movie features an environmental message and notions of class divide. superficial- but on that surface level is still gorgeous visuals. it's easy to slot in wonderful days next to films like final fantasy: the spirits within. full of imaginative designs and intriguing world building, but lacking in character and narrative.
i think both the 2d and the cg animations are wonderfully realized. the movie uses both to their own respective strengths. the traditionally animated characters engage in kinetic hand-to-hand combat, with each punch and kick landing with weight and power. meanwhile, computer generated flying vehicles effortlessly zip through the air with verve and precision, firing guns in energetic dogfights.
in these moments as well as the movie's more picturesque and ruminative ones, it excels- if only on a surface level. i'm glad movies like this exist, because they are the ultimate half-paying-attention sort. pleasant to look over at, but requiring no deeper appreciation or understanding. wonderful days will make a fine genre addition to my vast movie collection. someday.
