It's been a while since a movie made me laugh this hard and this consistently. The bizzareness of Ongaku is incredibly refreshing and truly endearing. The art style is such a joy to watch, it has this rough-around-the-edges look to it but it just works perfectly with what the movie is. And there were many truly creative, expressive moments... The amount of work and passion that must have gone into this film is ridiculous. I love the dry, deadpan humour. The protagonists are so much fun to follow and, honestly, despite their weirdness, strangely real. Aimless kids, bored with everything, with no sense of purpose or direction, they seem to not care about anything (well, Kenji), but you get the sense that that's not in fact true at all. The "music" this trio produces can hardly be called that, and yet it's strangely touching to see the passion it inspires not just in them, but the people around them. But don't be mistaken, this movie isn't going for some deep, profound narrative. It's very simple and silly; no grand story, you just follow these three talentless delinquents in their daily escapades. But there's so much heart in it that I couldn't stop smiling even when I wasn't laughing my ass off. Everything about this film is such a delight. I can't wait to show it to people.
