the babadook: is it a ghost story? or is a possession story? or a haunted house story? or a slasher/stalker film? in truth it's all of the above and it is one of the best horror movies i have seen in a while.
it's as good as all the critics (and people) have said. it's haunting and original and truly scary. it's really well acted and it looks beautiful (as much as scary can look beautiful that is). it also goes places you don't expect which is rare.
the best thing about this movie is that at no point does it fall apart, not for 5 minutes, not for 1 minute. it is solid throughout which is a very rare thing these days for horror movies.
i'm actually not feeling well at the moment so i'm having slight trouble remembering a few neat details about the film i wanted to share but i am recalling that it felt very much like what a terry gilliam directed horror film would feel like. (i think- i'm ill).
lastly i want to mention that it's very rare for a horror movie to scare me or leave a lingering impression of the chills. well after the movie ended i went to bed and my cat has decided he doesn't like the spot for his new water bowl so he drags it, along tiles, and it makes a wierd scratching sound, kind of like the babadook. man was i freaked out lying in bed. even though i knew what the sound was the movie was so effective it left me chilled to the bone.
