i am a fan of dave eggers and i love tom twyker so when i heard about this film i couldn't wait to see it. i missed it in theatres, to my chagrin, so when i finally saw it it would probably be when i found the dvd for cheap. well hmv in canada closed down and i ended up finding the dvd for cheap long before i expected. my plan of reading the book and then watching the movie wasn't going to be that spread out. the book was still fresh in my mind (i had timed the theatrical release within a few weeks of finishing the book). and so i watched the film and it was a very faithful adaptation of the work. very faithful. it had a new beginning that worked well to set up the story (and it's set to talking heads) and i think the end had changed slightly too (it is a little hazy). i liked the book a lot but it wasn't amazing like some of other egger works. it was a fast, enjoyable read that said a lot but it was never more than fun. the movie is the same. it's really well done, but in the end it never stretches too deep. but i also think that is the point. a great cast, a great story and very of our time you can't not enjoy this film. it's got a fantastic score that elevates the film to higher pastures. it's got a great cast. it is never boring and it really captures the spirit of the book. this here movie was pretty much exactly as i expected it to be. not my favourite twyker film but still a solid effort. i think the ending came a little rushed and it could of been stretched a few minutes more to make the whole experience more complete but otherwise i can't really fault too much of this film. having read the book i think i see more merit in the craft of this film than those who haven't. only because as an adapted film it really is one of the better adaptations i have seen. this doesn't mean this is the greatest film ever but it does mean that a hologram for the king gets a higher rating than i think i would of given it had i not read the book. book aside, if you like dramadies that tell the story of a man who has lost almost everything and must find a way to turn it around then you will get a lot of milage out of this unique and original take. production design: 9 out of 10 cinematography: 8 out of 10 re-playability: 7 out of 10 originality: 8 out of 10 costumes: 8 out of 10 directing: 8 out of 10 editing: 8 out of 10 acting: 8 out of 10 music: 9 out of 10 script: 8 out of 10 81/100
