quick hit: call me crazy, but i dug blair witch. the direct sequel to the 1999 phenomenon may lack a bit in terms of mystery and mood, but a found footage horror films go it's appropriately intense and does a nice job of setting up some twists along the well-traveled road that the original blazed.
this film's biggest problem is that found footage is a glut in the marketplace anymore, and so the tricks that were innovative in 1999 just don't seem original this time around. but adam wingard and simon barrett did a nice job narratively tying this story to the original and they adapt the film for modern technology just enough to work. the acting is fine if not extraordinary and while there is a preponderance of jump scares, they're legitimately frightening instead of just startling. the key to the film's success is the incredibly intense final act, which is an assault on the senses in a good way and leaves your nerves appropriately fried by the end.
to be clear, this isn't some kind of horror masterpiece and it is by no means influential like its predecessor was. it's all pretty rote when you look at it objectively, but i was unnerved and creeped out in the final half of the film and that's not something that happens often to me. that's more than enough to give it a pass. this is likely the end of the franchise after the disappointing (but still successful) financial returns but at least it ends on an upswing and we can forget all about the abysmal mess that was book of shadows.
