so i couldn't be more excited to watch batman again. i loved this movie when i was younger. i fucking loved it and it's been way to long and i have wanted to see it again for years upon years. i remember seeing it in the theatre and many times on tv over the next few years.
now maybe i'm just older and jaded or maybe in this modern world of 2015 where superhero movies are a dime a dozen or maybe it's because christopher nolan's batman movies were so good but this film sadly feels a little dated, a little slow, a little not as good as i once thought.
not that it's a bad movie, not at all. other than the fact that it ushered in, in a sense, the superhero genre and it was almost a first of it's kind, and for 1989 it was amazing, it just doesn't seen to have held up as much as i thought it would.
i found some of the effects looked like models. i found some of the acting to be less than stellar (robert wuhl anyone?). i found some of the dialogue to be stilted and fake. i found some of the story elements to be cheesy or rushed or rushed and cheesy (love story between bruce wayne and vicki vale happens in what, 5 hours?). i found it to be a little lax in pace and action (not a bad thing but not what i expected).
but there are also some very good things. the camerawork is good, the music is good and there are some iconic shots that will never be forgotten. the look of batman and the joker is just phenomenal. keaton is great as a tormented bruce wayne/batman and jack nicholson steals the show every time he appears, which is probably more than anyone else.
i would venture to say that nicholson is what keeps this movie going, is what keeps it fresh, is what elevates it higher, is what keeps it interesting. he is captivating and awesome and if you took him out of this film the film would be no good whatsoever in 2015 (maybe?).
it's sad when memories are shattered. my memories of this film were great. i thought it might of even been better than batman begins (which i also haven't seen in a while). nope, not a chance of that happening. batman is not a bad film but there are a few things that stop it from being great. what i mentioned above and the fact that this is a product of a certain time and place in our history, the 80's, and filmmaking and superhero films have advanced so much since then that this batman just can't hold up.
