it's a shame that this film takes a turn into a vampire film near the end of it. the first half is really really good and carries all of the tarantino trademarks that we come to expect from him. that is by far the most enjoyable part of this film. however, i can't say that i'm a fan of the second half.
you can tell that there is a tremendous amount of talent behind this film and the craft of most of it is very admirable. however, i'm not sure that the sensibilities of rodriguez and tarantino really mix all that well. the second half, which is far more rodriguez than tarantino, doesn't mesh at all with the crime story being told in the beginning and feels derivative of many other vampire films that came before it.
at the same time, george clooney is a joy to watch in this type of film. i'd love to see him work with tarantino again because i think that he delivers that type of dialogue really well. and, while tarantino is a very good writer, he is a pretty brutal actor. his performance here did the film no favors.
in the end, this is a very uneven film. i feel as if it would have been a better film if they didn't choose to take the turn towards the vampire film towards the end. the two parts clashed too much tonally for my tastes.
