when toy story was first released i had the notion that computer generated animation was not a very good way to go. traditional animation could and would never be replaced. it wasn't until, maybe, a bug's life when my thoughts started to change. it is this reason alone i had never seen toy story until many years later. and when i did finally see it i was blown away.
it's time to see it again. last night for what is perhaps the fourth or fifth time i put on toy story to watch again, for the first time since the third part was released. i settled into my watching position and i let the movie begin.
and even still, when watching toy story, you can see what a game changer of a movie it was. the script was amazing, with jokes for adults and toys that adults grew up with and a fantastically original (for animation) story. the graphics were way beyond there time and the voice cast was just perfect. could you picture anyone other than don rickles being mr. potato head? i can't. toy story will make you laugh, cry, cheer, and applaud. it features hanks, allen, rickles, adult jokes, kids jokes, huge laughs, tender moments, ingenious ideas, fantastic production design, stellar 'camera work' and top notch directing for a perfectly paced film that will make you feel like a kid again.
sure the graphics maybe don't look as as good as modern day cg animation but it still mainly holds up and at times things still look photo realistic. and sure the story is a little more simple and subdued and the set pieces a little less 'wow than it's sequels and animation in general but it was the first of it's kind and it did open the door for a new industry (and somewhat shut the door for an old one).
toy story is highly recommended. it not only ushered in the age of pixar and cg animated pictures but it did it with a movie that had heart and passion and love put into it. the film that changed animation could of been ho hum on story and meandering on plot but looked out right incredible (like a michael bay film) but it didn't. nope, the film that changed animation turned out to be toy story and it is a near masterpiece, only brought down from five stars because it's sequel is just that much better. all hail toy story and all hail pixar!!!
