huuuge props to netflix for having the balls to announce and release this on the same day. that is probably my favorite thing to come out of the whole situation surrounding this movie. i hope more studios, or at least netflix, try this short announce-to-release thing. now, on to the movie. it was kind of bad. i certainly don't regret watching it, but it oozes missed potential. the first half of this movie is actually pretty solid. it's a fun, bizarre, cheesy sci-fi romp with a rag-tag group of scientists facing dimensional oddities that come with an experiment gone wrong. it doesnt make any sense whatsoever but its fun to watch. if the whole movie had been like this, it would've been a great little addition to the cloververse. however, the movie takes a depressing turn. the last 40-ish minutes of this movie, past a certain character's death, is just a generic blob of nothing. and it's such a shame, given just how weird and fun the first half was. there's some other issues with the movie besides the last act, such as the overall unfocused nature of the film, but they're relatively minor compared to the downer that is the last act. last thing, the biggest missed opportunity of the film is the subplot with hamilton's husband. it could've been so good, having a tangential connection to the first movie, seeing the events played out from another, less-shaky, perspective. instead, all we get is the final shot of the film, which while very dumb and kind of forced, i still like due to just being a cloverfield fan who wants more of this universe. overall, really neat way to release a movie, i just wish it was with something better. instead we got an bad movie that could've been so great.
