i'm really disappointed that this doesn't hold up nearly as well as it did two summers ago. there's very little to even admire and appreciate about this classic.
the score's pretty good, although mostly overused.
tom savini's make-up is really good, although mostly underused.
i like the twist reveal scene, although the pacing really slows down afterwards for the rest of the film.
lots of charming 80's moments that will trick you into thinking this has a personality. some cool camera stuff.
this movie is
so.
fucking.
boring.
it's almost unwatchable due to the amount of b-roll used and scenes that could have very easily been severely cut down. there is no reason for this to be 95 minutes. this could easily be less than 80. or less than 70.
the kills are very inconsistent entertainment-wise. the first half of the kills are great, but it gets to a point in the film where it feels like the budget was running tight, and the second half's either suck or take place off-screen.
there was even an attempt at a minor subplot that pays off in the most unsatisfying way. i was genuinely shocked that the filmmakers would use 10-15 minutes to detract from the main story for an outcome so embarrassingly bad.
in conclusion,
is this an extremely painful-to-get-through, incompetent, dull movie that doesn't hold up nearly 40 years later? yeah...
