film #18 of hooptober 4.0: revenge of the hoop
for most of the first act of satanic, jeffrey g. hunt's apparent ode to young adults doing the stupidest things they can imagine and paying the price, i was intrigued. the anthony jaswinski-scripted tale of four friends who ditch their coachella plans in favor of a sight-seeing tour of los angeles' satanist tourist hotspots doesn't do much to excite right off the bat, but there's a bit of grounding there to try and get us invested in the characters. it's not entirely successful, but the effort is there.
unfortunately, the film quickly descends into meandering nonsense from there. the characters find themselves running afoul of a group of satanists and have an encounter with a runaway, which turns out bad for them. it's not that there's anything objectively wrong with all of this, outside of the characters being stupider than your average horror characters and the two men being irritating assholes. the problem is that hunt doesn't seem to understand when to stop setting up plot. nearly the entire movie passes before it remembers that it's a horror film. by then it's too little, too late, compounded by the fact that characters don't even die on-screen. sarah hyland and clara mamet are fine as the two girls in the group, and anthony carrigan is appropriately creepy in his supporting role as an occult store owner. but there isn't nearly enough here to make satanic worth its running time.
