while not a four star affair, cult of chucky is awash in style and gore, and perhaps the most creative plot this series has ever cooked up with a straight face. i love this one, i really do. despite being tonally uneven, and with a plot that double-backs on itself one too many times even after we 'get it', there's an infectious fun to cult of chucky that is undeniable.
if curse was emulating the original, cult is following that pattern by going a bit crazier like 2. the story actually took a turn i did not expect, which is wild that this franchise still has any tricks left up its sleeve after six other movies. i won't spoil it here, but it was really fun. mileage may vary though, i know some fans might wanna quit once they see what's going on, but not me. i enjoyed it.
however, mid-way through writing this, my dad walked in and made a very good point. curse and cult lack one crucial thing that really lowers my enjoyment of both: the climax. i always love watching chucky get his at the end of each installment. his creative demises always boost the rating by at least half a point. i adore the climax of child's play 2, but both curse and cult just kinda... fizzle out. cult barely feels like it has a real ending, curse wasn't too much better.
both movies have a lot of fun ideas for the franchise, and both are worth watching, but they don't really stick the landing. i enjoy seeing the monster die at the end of these movies, and with how wild they get, i expect a proportionate resolution. i like chucky as a villain, but if the filmmakers think i want to see him get a happily-ever-after, boy are they wrong.
i was impressed that alex vincent returned as andy, and he does get a few cool scenes, but he's not really given much to do. like its predecessor, cult of chucky seems to roll out the carpet for a sequel at the end, (while also making a reference to bound. nice.) but don mancini may have given up his chance to wrap things up with a bang.
