another magical wes anderson film that elicits emotions few films and few filmmakers manage do to (at least on such a consistent basis.) laugh in the pathos and misery of the characters within the film. it's funny, often hilarious and always has a tinge of sadness running throughout. feel the joy when it all finally comes together in a crescendo of music, images and emotions. relish ed norton in a film that made me like ed norton again. watch bruce willis play a boring man where it actually works for the story. how can i not mention bill murray? ok, mentioned... brace yourself for the magic... read

on rewatch i decided to demote this down from a 4/5. i still think it's a pretty good movie, but in this review i'm not gonna get into all the good stuff in this film. i'm sure that's been over discussed to death in every other review on this website. instead i'll focus on the stuff i didn't like and why i decided to demote this. first things first, this jared gilman guy. he's not completely awful in this, but goddamn he is not a leading man. half of the time he sounds like he unintentionally stumbles his line but wes thought it was cute so he left it in. part of this is the dialogue, it's... read

wes anderson's bizarre approach to storytelling, while cinematographically engaging (for about 30 seconds), sends the viewer into this warped reality of imaginary dysfunction. much as i like the new england setting and the costuming, the scouting metaphors were as drab as their khaki gear. can't fault swinton, willis and norton for decent performances though. read

despite my enjoyment of rushmore i just can't get into other wes anderson films. i just find them boring and full of affectatious cunts. i got nothing out of watching this. i just felt i was going through the motions to get to the end and finish it. fucking whimsy. read

wes anderson is a filmmaker who inspires a very particular kind of reaction, depending on who you are. each of his films, from 1996's bottle rocket all the way through to 2009's fantastic mr. fox, make use of idiosyncratic characters and anderson's own off-beat sense of humor to create stories that are emotionally poignant but often require patience to appreciate the way they are intended to be. for many, his best work is 2001's the royal tenenbaums, a dryly witty affair that mixes comedy, sentiment and drama in such a way that it can be difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins.... read

very nice. the style is great which is typical for wes anderson. very funny and small scaled. but sometimes the movie was so over the top that felt kinda random. the cast was great the characters were good but didn't work for me quite well. some effects were really bad. sometimes the movie let me cringe but i didn't mind. great time 7/10. read

After the delightful The Grand Budapest Hotel, I was looking forward to what is often referred to as the greatest Wes Anderson picture. Unfortunately, great this isn't.
All the little things we look forward in an Anderson movie are there, the quirky characters, the interesting visuals, the odd frames and the nice use of music, but there is just something missing. As many have said before, it is just too much visual over substance. Or maybe coming-of-age stories don't work for me. read

This was my first Wes Anderson film. I decided to start with this one since I had previously started it (watched about 1/3), but I never went back to finish it. The lines are delivered with no emotion. It's like the actors were directed to say their lines, and if they did anything more than that, they were doing it wrong. The actors seemed stiff, and the dry comedy that Anderson is aiming for is more dry than humorous. read

Beautiful film. Sam and Suzy's whimsical life on the run and their dynamics reminds me of Godard's "Pierrot le fou". read

I thought this was a pretty good adventure. Some of the jokes resonated well and the plot kept me engaged the whole time. I enjoyed the progression of the story and thought the ending was nice. There's a weird scene in the middle that just doesn't sit right with me? Directing kids to be intimate with each other... I mean, in real life, sure those scenarios can happen, but realistically we had a bunch of older men giving borderline pedo commands to a pair of kids. They didn't need to be sexualized to that degree to get the point across for that scene. And it's hard to overlook read more Was this review helpful to you?
