The Old Way

The Old Way is directed by Brett Donowho and stars Nicolas Cage in his first Western movie, but the movie just wasnt as awesome as it sounded to me originally. Ryan Kiera Armstrong co-stars here as the daughter of our main lead here, but she really fails to impress me once again. The best thing I can say here about her is that her performance was better than it was in Firestarter. A vengeful past catches up with a retired shootist (and, most importantly, with his family) forcing him to dust off his guns and killing skills. The title pretty much says it all: this low-budget western throws back to that same past era of simplistic storytelling pleasure that Walter Hill recently explored in Dead for a Dollar, barring excessive violence, downplaying the intensity of its revenge theme with unexpected comedic tones and, most surprisingly, with a relationship between Cage and 12-years-old Armstrong that delivers a couple of unsentimental heartfelt moments.
