atmospheric and epic, but somewhat trite and somewhat predictable in a lion king kinda way. the ape-facial expressions were pretty well cgi'ed in. read

fuck me sideways with a banana or seven. this blew my mind. those first 10/20 minutes were beautiful. i'd happily have sat there for the full running time just watching those apes go about their day. sadly that wasn't to be and i knew that. thankfully, barring a few minor annoyances, the rest was brilliant too. the one annoyance that stands out above the rest is koba riding a horse with two machine guns. if anything says producer input it's that. read

The recent Apes movies are like a middle finger to Abram's Star Trek's rejection of sci fi as metaphor, replacing theme with spectacle and making nonsense action movies.
Dawn represents a completely different philosophy. Every element of the movie is in service of its greater thematic aims. Even the fuckin' Aspect Ratio has been chosen deliberately and carefully. It's what sci fi should be. read

worse than the first. a rather clicheistic spectacle dragged down by dumb (of course when you go on a diplomatic mission you take with you the most vocal and freaked out skeptic) and awfully predictable moments (who will stumble into our hiding hero?) read

my second watch of this film and it was just as good, if not better than the first time. i firmly believe that to judge a film well you need to see it more than once, after all sometimes you might love a film and then a few years later you watch it again and it is nowhere near as good (or you've grown up and your taste has changed/matured). dawn of pota does everything right and will keep you coming back again and again. people complain that the humans don't do much and aren't drawn out much in their characters here. i call bullshit! this movie is not about the humans but when they are there... read

pretty ok for what it was, and certainly exceeded my expectations. main criticism would be that the human characters were fairly cookie-cutter flat. read

i feel like these movies will never really get the widespread acclaim they deserve as legitimate sci-fi masterpieces. dawn is a pitch perfect commentary on human nature. but because it's a big summer blockbuster about apes who end up wielding machine guns, it gets dismissed by the public at large as just a fun movie. which is a shame, because dawn is laden with nuance and thoughtfulness which precious few sci-fi movies are these days. i noticed that the arrival of the climax in each of these movies, even the older ones, is a very bittersweet thing. full of dread even. unlike a blockbuster read

I'm not sure a film has ever followed its predecessor so perfectly as this one, and unfortunately that's not a compliment. Everything that destroyed the great potential of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and reduced it to barely watchable is back in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Once again it is the writers' total inability to write believable "bad guys." They're all absolutely idiotic, irrational, unbelievable caricatures, on the level (or even worse) than one-dimensional films like Avatar. And that's a real shame, because this is not at all a one-dimensional film. The "good"... read more Was this review helpful to you?

As they struggle to reboot civilization a decade after being nearly wiped out by simian flu, humans find they need to build a friendly relationship with the intelligent apes that have established themselves in the secluded woods outside San Francisco. Bookended by significant close-ups on the eyes of Caesar, the smart chimpanzee from "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" who's been leading the primates' march towards civility, "Dawn" ups the stakes on the saga's inbuilt pessimism by showing how hard it is for reason to prevail over predatory instincts, fear and betrayal: equally split between the... read

Few sequels have ever made me feel this way where it takes what came before it and adds to it in such meaningful ways that enhance everything about it.
Matt Reeves did something here that I really didn't expect at all, he got me to be completely captivated and insanely emotional about everything going on in the plot. There is never an unnecessary moment, everything feeds into something else in the narrative to build empathy and pull me more into the world.
Caesar is my favorite fictional character I have seen in a long time, Andy Serkis continues to masterfully play him, it's honestly one... read
