Metropolis is one of those films that definitely will stay with you long after you have seen it.

When a film is from the silent era, there's always a risk of it being way too irrelevant because technology just wasn't there yet to tell a great story. I am of course talking about sound. It's really hard to imagine any movie working without sound, and delivering even a fracture of a connection with the viewer without it. Metropolis is that exception.

this is a masterpiece of a movie. fritz lang's metropolis resonates with a number of issues that society still struggles with 90 years after it was made; the most prevalent being the ever present class warfare between the working class and the elite. the hands and the head, the workers doing the bidding of planners, never with complete trust in the other, but always reluctantly dependent on one another. what we get here is quite allegorical in todays fraught times. when an interloper comes along and starts spreading false news and lies in order to sow dissent between the classes and cause read more

I have seen this three times now. I recently watched it for a third time, because a documentary on film music mentioned how the soundtrack was composed along with the movie to best fit the scenes. Since I didn't remember much about it from the earlier times I saw it, and since the second time I saw it was with a new synthetic soundtrack, I watched a restored version on YouTube to experience its original soundtrack. easily the best film i've seen from the silent era. it is an epic in the way it is constructed, but it doesn't feel overwhelming and really it's story is surprisingly contained. the acting is good for the era and effects are incredible. the entire tone of the film is really well done. i initially began watching the version with the loy cook score and i would recommend everyone steer clear of that one because it is awful. the music is not right at all and it is jarring and in contrast to what is happening in the story. watched as part of scavenger hunt 40 my list | jasmeet's master list... read more

version: 2h28m with a re-recording of huppertz's original score. (this restored edition can be found on youtube) this film has a lot in common with blade runner 2049 actually... the good: everyone knows the design is iconic, and it's just a marvel what they could accomplish with special effects nearly a hundred years ago. brigitte helm gives a real tour-de-force performance in the dual role of maria/the maschinenmensch. fritz lang gets all the credit for this, but he only helped on the script with his wife, thea von harbou, who wrote the book. the biblical references and parallels in what read more

lxxx. metropolis (1927) - without a doubt impressive in its vision for 90 years ago, with clarity on theme & hitting each beat that wouldnt be formalised for decades yet, but dull in its long-stretched execution. largely, this may just be due to the pacing were accustomed to in contemporary films, but post the setup, i found it extremely difficult to see it through, as it plodded lethargically to a much expected, obvious climax. the heavy handed theatrics compensating for words also felt absurd, rather than engaging. i guess it explains why slapstick flourished in the era, for it had scene... read more

I've been waiting to watch this for a long while, and boy am I glad that I did. Though some of the politics and continuity get a little confusing near the end, the absolute spectacle jammed into nearly every frame here more than makes up for it. This is also the first time I've seen Brigitte Helm, whose performance I absolutely adored. It's a crime that the full version of this film may never be seen again in its true glory, but the mostly-restored-and-cobbled-together cut that I saw still blew me away. I'll certainly be revisiting this again sometime in the future. read more
