harry potter. i can't think of any other series of films that improved so much as it went along. police academy certainly didn't. even my beloved alien series didn't.  it's not as if philosopher's stone is bad either, it's fun to watch. much darker towards the end than i remember but there's some real joy to be had watching this.  the digital doubles haven't aged well though. oh boy. read more

i haven't seen all of the harry potter films and the ones i have seen were a decade ago, so i decided to give them a watch. the first thing that jumped out at me was the magical world of wonder that chris columbus was able to create. visually the film really captures the setting of this wizarding world that is right under our feet so well. the score is fantastic and helps make this possible. it definitely is made for children with the way that it is approached, the story driven entirely by kids while the adults are shown as authority figures who are blind to what is actually happening around... read more

i don't reckon i'd ever seen this one in its entirety. i'd always either catch bits of the beginning and then move on to something else, or i'd come in just before the troll bit. now having seen the whole thing, i absolutely get why this was such a hit- although i think that having so much to show and explain before the main plot even kicks in is kind of a drag. don't get me wrong, i don't feel there was any other proper way to do the first act, so i'm not suggesting they should've done things differently. and, yes, i feel the sense of awe and wonder right along with harry as he's introduced... read more

Rewatching my childhood. This movie is like a warm, cozy blanket. It's not doing anything difficult or trying to hard, just an amazing fun movie all the way through. Even 20 years later it still holds up. BTW, this is a way better Christmas movie than Die Hard ever will be. read more

After growing up and then watching again I have realized that some of the plot logics are incredebly stupid. Also, mothers love protecting Harry Potter every time feels like a lame plot armor. But it's a great movie nonetheless because of it's unparalleled fantasy world building. Even after all these years, it's still an entertaining movie to watch. read more
