The Jazz Singer

it is a technical pioneer, but there really is no redeeming quality to this film beyond it's use of synchronized sound. primarily it is a silent film with a couple musical numbers, but they aren't very good. despite their claims that he is a "jazz singer," it is clear that the producers had never heard jazz. the entire film is really slow and plodding to get to a crisis that seems completely unavoidable. i don't understand why he can't just be the cantor and the jazz singer. they specifically say that the events aren't at the same time and they ultimately have the big decision eventually work... read more
