my family watched this and the shining back to back in the middle of the night at the start of winter, and i gotta say there's no other way to experience either of them. the practical effects, the creeping score, the terrifying claustrophobia and paranoia associated with the thought of an inescapable, chameleon like threat? no better pick for family movie night! read more

i have not watched many john carpenter movies but he is fast becoming one of my favorite director, all the hype around it was real and now i want to watch halloween as soon as possible. im not a huge fan of cgi esp. bec of the excessive use these days, this movie proves even to this day that practical effects done right can be as effective if not more. the remarkable suspense and atmosphere added with thrilling paranoia and claustrophobia made it a treat. most of the cast were incredible and the scores made it an absolute gem. 8.5/10 read more

there have been several academic studies done trying to figure out why the thing was critically panned when it first released. the conclusions were that those critics were some goof ass muthafuckas. this is a masterclass of horror and still frightening to this day. it will never age. read more

some of the best effects ever with a few tense scenes but not much else... it really is a testament to how good the make-up is when for the past couple of years, i've heard nothing about how revolutionary this film is, and it's still able to leave me in awe while watching. there's not a single moment where you doubt the ridiculous creature moments and events unfolding due to such a realistic, gruesome job done by phyllis newman and ken chase. with the idea that the monster shape-shifts into whatever it kills, there's moments throughout the film where the members within the crew doubt each read more

ever since i first saw john carpenter's the thing, at a very young age, i was obsessed. i loved it. bare in mind this is on cable television, in the early 90's where you have tons of commercials, 90% of the gore cut out, 40% of the picture missing and a mildy reedited storyline. i have now seen the thing more times than i can remember and watching it again now i was just as excited, the last time being only three months ago... and that still feels like too long. i just can't get enough of this movie. and the reason is because this is a perfect film. it is not only john carpenter's best movie... read more

Finally ended up seeing this movie that many seem to rate as one of the best horror movies. I thought it was fairly average interesting story but hardly any creature action for the run time of just under 2 hours. Was cool effects when u did see "the thing" but other than that really slow moving with a whole bunch of talking and figuring out who might have been infected or not. read more

horror x52 (2018) rewatch watched this on arrow blu-ray. those arrow guys really outdid themselves with this release. video is really crisp, and there are a ton of features. amazing movie. it's just so damn good visually, dean cundey did a great job shooting this. quite possibly the best practical effects ever, yet somehow the academy awards didn't even nominate this for best visual effects. fuck the oscars! i love kurt russell in just about everything he does, and he's great here while sporting glorious hair and beard. the only issues i have are little cuts here and there, otherwise... read more

How did I forget just how good this film is? Not that I thought it was bad,but I just kind of forgot how much I enjoyed it. The creatures in this film are just so fantastic. My quick rating - 8;6/10. To take a flick from 1951 "The Thing from Another Planet" which in its time and still a classic; and actually improve; drastically on it is a tall feat. But John Carpenter did just that with this 1982 piece of gold. The story is simple; an Arctic expedition team happens across an alien ship and inadvertently releases it. The film is terrific on many levels. It works as your straight monster or action type film, as a horror/sci-fi and also as a very intriguing look into the human psyche. The incredible sense of paranoia, mistrust and fear, lent not only by Carpenter's direction (which is stunning) but also by the incredible acting of the cast in general. One of my favorite horror movies! Though this time around, I'd say it's not necessarily a horror movie if the metric is "what makes me afraid". Watching The Thing felt more like a murder mystery who-done-it than anything else as you follow along with the characters and their actions. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat for its entire duration, the characters are all likable (to a point hah), and good glory the REAL FX and prop work... marvelous.
