i am a simple man. i am often times fond of direct narratives and cut and dry good guys vs. bad guys. not always, sure, but... i'm not crazy about movies like this, but there's no denying that it is exceptionally well made and with stunning performances to boot. cat and mouse crime thrillers always seem tedious to me. admittedly, they are great at generating tension and suspense, and in that regard, the departed is in a class of its own with few peers. but the story, by design, is without any forward thrust or momentum. i only found the characters peripherally interesting, and am rather read more

The movie itself is solid and has great acting form all characters, great writing and good dialogues. It's almost like a masterclass in making cop dramas. But what really amazed me was how easy it felt. Di Caprio and Matt Damon two A Hollywood A Listers. They made it so easy to play this cop/spy roles. Scorsese makes it look easy handling these 2 actors and balancing the movie, the pacing for this 2H 5Min movie. Making something like this in the Industry that I grew up watching is probably impossible. This movie didn't have expensive technology or grand vision or mind bending screenplay. read more

I wish this wasn't Scorsese's last movie in a contemporary setting, we were robbed of some truly great cell phone cinema the last decade and a half. Just about as well made a thriller as you'll find, especially in it's closing act, where the movie manages to remain tight and concise even with all it's narrative threads leading to a chaotic climax. Not my favourite Scorsese but maybe my go to if picking one for a hangout/popcorn movie or perhaps even a first movie of his to watch. read more

Maybe it's just me but this is one of the weakest Scorsese films. The acting is fantastic, the score is awesome and the overall story is pretty smart. Where this movie fails is the dialogue, it's just shit, it sounds weird and unnatural, everyone's a fucking wiseass in this movie and they keep saying cringworthy one liners that just don't feel like something a real person would ever say, very different from other Scorsese films that are praised for these exact elements. The romance between Bill and Madolyn also doesn't work, they don't make sense or have any chemistry. It also has some read more
