on my second viewing, the strengths and weaknesses became more apparent. the early use of foreshadowing and imagery is excellent. the first meeting between david and elijah uses shadows so well to contrast the characters. unfortunately shyamalan couldn't figure out quite what they wanted to do with david once he figured out who he was and that portion of the film is underwhelming. there also is too much focus on his martial difficulties which don't add very much to the story, but get a fair amount of screen time. read more

this is one of the strongest four stars i'll ever give a movie on this site. unbreakable has some issues which keep it from being perfect, but it's undeniably a masterful and unique approach to a genre which is typically defined by primary colors and capes. unbreakable doubles down not on spectacle, but on human drama and understated emotions. my favorite part in this movie is a simple breakfast scene, where a silent exchange between the protagonist and his son is one of the most satisfying payoffs in the entire film. people who've seen it know exactly what scene i'm talking about. of course... read more

a unique take on a superhero story, where a seemingly normal man with extraordinary abilities meets a man with an extraordinary disease. no capes, no flashy powers, or big fights, just two men discovering who they are and their place in the world. really well-done for a superhero movie that went ahead of the marvel movie formula. sure it's a little slow at times, but i don't think it's supposed to be particularly exciting. it's more thought-provoking than anything. read more

Unbreakable is directed by M. Night Shyamalan and this was a fairly enjoyable film but it hasnt aged like fine wine in recent years due to us getting many other great superhero flicks. Bruce Willis & Samuel L. Jackson are great here as you would expect, so thats a plus for this film. The skill set of David Dunn is intriguing and interesting here, but I would have liked to see another sequence where David Dunn is going out and saving people. Overall, Unbreakable is a decent film but it just doesnt stand out to me in a time where superhero movies are a whole genre in film read more

Watched this because M Night has another movie coming out in theatres but also because Split has just come back on Netflix and I definitely want to revisit that. Honestly this is such a cool and slick movie, takes a premise that could have been overcomplicated with reams of expository dialogue or a big high stakes finish but just tells the story it wants to. Such a promising premise for a superhero franchise! If I had the opportunity to watch it upon release, I would undoubtedly have given it a 5/5 rating. Given the abundance of movies we've been exposed to, the story unfolds in the very first two scenes. That's why twists involving "decoy protagonists" didnt stand the test of time. read more
