reportedly "a war movie", but with almost no actual war in it, this ends up really being a tribute to australian "mateship" as it plays out amidst the backdrop of wwi. a few pithy words: i watched this both as a memorial day tribute and as a fan of latter day peter weir, whose films such as "fearless" and "master and commander" are criminally underrated in my opinion. this early work clearly does not have as strong of a driving narrative as those films however, where it's obvious weir knew what he wanted to say at the end of this film, and equally obvious he didn't know what story would lead... read more

Picaresque odyssey of two young sprinters who volunteer to fight Turks at Gallipoli and find themselves in the midst of the worst military disaster of Australian history. Marvelous, quietly desperate film, it limits combat action to its last few minutes: war is just a brutal equalizer where dreams, talent and friendship are blown into oblivion in just a few meaningless seconds. read more

Oh young Mel Gibson, I miss you so. One nice thing about this movie is this was filmed before Brave Heart, so Mel Gibson was still sane (I think). Anyway, I like war movies, a lot. And having scene this film now twice it really was as good as I remember it. Gallipoli (if you didn't know) was a absolute slaughter. The Ottoman Empire mowed down wave after wave of troops fighting for the British Crown. However this is not your typical war film. We don't get to that part till the very end. The whole point of the movie was to document the Emotional and Physical struggle of getting into and read more
