flawless, intriguing, thrilling, and thoughtful. it's a class warfare film. the haves versus the have nots. watched this without bias or expectation and it became my favorite bong joon-ho film. it's incredibly well written, you have no idea what's going to happen next. everything is perfect with this film. the cinematography, the performances, the music. best film of the year. that's all i've got to say. read more

previous review although i was prepared for the themes, this film still left me discovering more on rewatch, further realizing how many layers to this there actually are. the acting is still amazing. not glossed or self-asserting but as subtle and realistic as it needs to be and more. can't see how anything else coming out this year will be able to top this ensemble. i take back my complaint about some scenes going on too long. although it holds a 130-minute runtime, everything still manages to feel so meticulous and purposeful that i can't help but admire bong joon-ho's script and direction... read more

one of my favorite movies of 2019. it does not feel like one movie but three movies stitch together to create this masterpiece. the final twist of the movie had me on the edge of my seat for the remaining time of the movie. movies like this come to show you don't need special fx to create a great movie. you only need a good story with interesting and relatable characters, a vision, and music that creates the right atmosphere based on what's on the screen and how the main character is feeling. read more

what really stood out to me on a second viewing was how intense the violence feels. there is so much violence in most movies that for the most part i am pretty numb to it, but in parasite it all makes me cringe. even just falls or cuts that aren't extreme by any stretch i felt more than i do beheadings in other media to say nothing of the heightened violence at other points. i really can't figure out why that is, bong joon-ho doesn't really show more of the violence, but there is something he does that makes it feel more real, and i don't really enjoy that. i did pick up on a few more setups... read more

a rewatch. parasite is not that good. its above average. i revisited this after around a year and i really liked it when i saw it for the first time. so, the thing is, i had fun with this movie when i watched it, but it wasn't as good as i remembered it to be. the film isn't something new honestly, that's how i felt. the first half was extremely engaging yes, the second half really started to drag around imo. seriously though, poor people living underground is symbolic but not really that effective, the film does show things in a metaphorical way lots of times but it's just not at the level... read more

some movies just hit differently when you're poor. that was the first thing that came to my mind when i walked out of the theater, and i was only half joking. parasite follows two families--one rich and one poor--under a seemingly normal circumstance: the poor family works for the rich one. it's the series of cons they employ to get the jobs and the inevitable failure looming that's interesting. it isn't difficult to see what bong joon-ho tries to say in parasite. allegories are cleverly placed throughout the movie, and one particular monologue near the end drives the point home. but what read more

gonna hold out until the lighthouse but so far this is looking like my film of the year. i mean, i'm a huge fan of bong joon ho's work (seriously, everything he's made was awesome in its own way, save for snowpiercer but we don't talk about that) but this was just amazing. it managed to be such an entertaining and engaging mix of comedy and thriller/drama and the visuals basically felt like a director just flexing for the sake of it which came out awesome. oh, and it serves as an examination of the class divide in korea and basically also most other countries, which is a nice bonus. don't read more

What can I even say about this film? It was honestly just breathtaking. Every minute I felt for these characters. And even during the last hour. It sounds like too long of a film, but honestly, its not. It was perfectly paced, really giving you the time to grow that attachment to these people. But just, holy fuck the ending was just wow. I'm not sure i understood the movie. I'm not as blown away by it as others might be. But i like the style and I like odd stories. Definitely worth watching if you like Coen-movies or Korean cinema. read more

My quick rating - 8;5/10. This is a shoe in for best picture of the year. I cannot see it losing for the foreign film category; that is for sure. What a great movie this is. The story is woven so well that each little bit you learn makes it that much more enjoyable; start to finish. What starts off so innocent slowly rolls down hill; getting darker and darker. Good interjections of comedy (dark) helps to separate you from realizing how depraved these individuals are; and also how calculated every little thing they do is. Now this movie was a real surprise. Directed by Bong Joon Ho who has previously directed Okja, Mother and Snowpiercer which are decent films in their own right. This had a mix of all different genres and never gave that predictability of what was going to happen next. It was violent at times and other times really funny and Bong even managed to make the violence humorous at times. Hopefully this will receive awards come Oscar time. Highly recommended read more

Memories of Murder is still my favorite Bong Joon-Ho film, but I think Parasite was even better than I remembered. I thought it might go down a peg or two since it's been a couple of years since I revisited it, but it's just so incredibly well crafted with not a single dull moment. When it finished and I saw the length of the film was 2hr13mins I had to double check because it feels more like 90 minutes, the pacing is immaculate. Now I really need to get around to watching the few Bong films I haven't caught yet, Mother especially. read more

This movie received an Oscar and zero criticism for the lack of diversity. Funny how that works with the overlords. Overrated but still entertaining. For those who have been watching Asian movies for years it's clear this was "discovered" by the masses. Worth a watch. read more

I enjoyed it. The cinematography was gorgeous, particularly in the rain scene. I like how the film ratches up the tension in different ways over the course of the film. I loved the sister in particular. Her character was weird in a really great way, and she had a lot of charisma. She was the one I most bought into as a con man. The scene of her sitting on the shitter smoking a cigarette was perfect. That said, I can't say I loved the film. I don't think it quite coalesced for me. A family living in poverty take an interest in a rich architect and his gullible wife and child and gradually con their way into the affluent family's life at the expense of others. A fascinating watch, dark and intelligent and at times funny together with a large dose of social commentary. The South Korean produced Parasite is one of the movie highlights of the year, expertly directed by Bong Joon-ho. read more

Finally able to watch this (in 4K HDR glory even), and I am just so pleasantly surprised. I've known and heard absolutely all of the buzz surrounding the film, acting, and directing and still after months of anticipation, this movie lived up to the hype. The fusing of genres to create something so unique and different was beyond refreshing after watching casual popcorn-flick type movies. I'm ashamed to say that I'm not well versed in too many foreign films other than ones I've "had" to watch in my film classes at College. This movie has made me want to seek out more foreign films and read more

I think it is the best movie of the decade (2010-19) and the fact that it comes from the east is truly amazing! All the scenes are exceptional, the shots and the soundtrack are meticulously studied. It's like eating your favorite dish for two hours. But why do I consider it the best of the decade, despite other similar films that analyze the same themes (like Shoplifters)? Simply because Bong had the wonderful idea of making a film that would also appeal to Europeans and Americans, hitting the target perfectly. read more

I wasn't expecting as much humor in this as there was but when it shifts, it goes a full 180. It felt like the best of the darker Coen Brothers films with an interlaced commentary on class and wealth. 100% deserving of its Oscars. read more

I remember searching for a cinema in my area that was showing Parasite, as the standard ones werent showing foreign films, possibly due to the fact that many of them arent printed ‘n minted with the Disney Seal of Quality. Funny how the film went on to win an Oscar despite this; I truly wonder what made the film so popular, it really is quite the mystery to my knowledge. Wow, where to begin with this film? There are are so many layers to peel back after seeing this that I'm sure several viewings will be needed to get a better grasp of how deep this film goes. So much can be said about this film and I know there are others that have put it in far better words than I can, but I'll point out some of my favourite aspects of this film: - The shot selection and use of space and framing was brilliant.
