hooptober 666 #19 horror x52 2019 rewatch watched on warner bros 4k blu-ray. my god it's beautiful! the first time i watched this was in the early 2000's on vhs. going from a mom & pop used vhs to 4k blu-ray is the biggest difference in audio/video quality ever for me! stanley kubrick has always been a great visual auteur, and this is no exception, this movie looks amazing. and this movie still works...i admit i was getting the goosebumps rewatching this. jack nicholson's decent to complete madness is captivating. read more

Is this movie good? Yes. Did Jack Nicholson's performance really detract from it? Yes. I don't understand how Kubrick could make Shelley Duvall do an absurd amount of takes to the point it affected her mental health and she became actually scared of Jack Nicholson but not tell Jack himself to do some more takes. Jack's performance a lot of the time is one-note or dry in the beginning of the film and in the latter half of the film, it's downright absurd and over the top to the point it was hard to take anything going on seriously anymore. My quick rating - 8;8/10. Another true classic of cinema; even though Stephen King was not a fan of the movie; and has gone on record many times to voice that opinion. Stanley Kubrick creates a horrifying vision of Kings book ofthe same name. To say the performances absolutely drive this movie is the understatement of the century. After having (finally) read the book I do kinda get why Stephen King hated this. As a book adaptation it doesn't do a very good job, the book is better and all that. On the other side though, this is still an amazing movie and a must watch for everyone interested in film. Shelley Duvall is amazing here and I do want to watch some more of her acting. read more

First rewatch in years but probably a movie I saw repeatedly decades ago. It's great but miss me with that Kubrick worship. The Shining and Full Metal Jacket are great but for me that's it. The multiple takes credited to his "genius" are sloppy continuity errors. The pivitol scene of Jack smashing in the bathroom door shows he busted 1 panel before stopping.
